Dog songs have always been popular. The Beatles, Elvis, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Monkees, even Ozzie Osbourne have all recorded songs related to our canine friends.

Community radio broadcaster BLU FM 89.1 is running a competition to find the best all-Australian dog songs.

“Every songwriter has a dog song in their creative back yard,” says competition organiser Francis Dutton. “The funny thing is that very often it turns out to be their best work.”

Francis collaborated with Margot Foster of ABC Radio National last year in a search for dog songs to play on the program Bush Telegraph. Now he has decided it is time to get serious in the quest for the ultimate Aussie song about tail-waggers.

“We’re not necessarily looking for children’s songs, either. We want adult songs and any song or instrumental piece in any style of music is welcome as long as it is dog-related,” says the BLU FM presenter.

This is a national competition and the 15 to 20 best entries will be included in a compilation CD of Aussie Dog Songs that will go out to community radio stations across the country for airplay.

“We’ll be playing all the recordings received on a special BLU FM program which we will offer to the national Community Radio Network. We’ll play the best on my program Random Groove and other programs here at BLU FM.”

Conditions of Entry

1. Each entry must include:

(A) Completed entry form (photocopies accepted; also available on

the Website www.blufm.org.au). Signatures must be original. This is to

be cut out and included in the CD case.

(B) CD containing the entry track (s) (no more than 3 songs per entry

form); length of individual tracks must not exceed 4 minutes. No

cassettes, please. If more than three tracks on the CD, please indicate

clearly the songs to be judged and played on air by track number and

name.

(C) Cheque or money order for $15.00 (Australian currency only). All

entries must be postmarked by 30 April 2007 or

earlier. Entries post marked after that date cannot be accepted.

Mail all entries to: BLU FM Dog Song Competition 2007,

PO Box 64, Katoomba, NSW, 2780.

2. All songs submitted must be original.

3. Contestants may enter as many tracks as desired but each entry requires

an entry fee. BLU FM is not responsible for late, lost, damaged, misdirected,

4. This competition is open to anyone, regardless of his or her nationality or

origin. BLU FM members may enter but will not be included in the judging

panel. CDs and other material will not be returned but added to the BLU FM

5. Winners will be chosen by a judging panel comprised of BLU FM music

presenters. Entries will be judged equally on originality, melody, lyrics and

performance. Songs may be in any language (but please include an English

translation of the lyrics). Production quality will not be part of judging criteria

but since the entries will be played on air, production quality is significant.

Entrants and their collaborators will retain full rights to all work submitted for

the competition. However, the CDs themselves will be added to our music

library.

6. Winners will be notified by mail. Entry to the competition constitutes

permission to use winners’ names, likenesses and voices for future publicity

7. BLU FM reserves the right to extend the competition deadline and the

announcement date if needed.

8. The best entries will be included on a compilation CD sent to community
