A Jazz Hour

...is sixty minutes of the very best of contemporary and nostalgic jazz recordings presented via COMRADSAT each week by Barry O'Sullivan from BLU FM 89.1 in the Blue Mountains. Each week listeners are treated to fine jazz from Australia, Europe and the Americas with a feature disc being the highlight of each program.

Previous highlights have included the recordings of Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Garret, John Scofield, Jan Garbarek and vocalists Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Anita O’Day, Blossom Dearie, Michelle Nicole, Allison Wedding, Shirley Horn and Diana Krall as well as the music of Australians Mike Nock, Judy Bailey, Joe Chindamo, David Rex, Mark Isaacs, Gerard Masters and groups like Ten Part Invention, Sandy Evans Trio, Alister Spence and Trio, Andrew Robson Trio, Steve Hunters Local World, and Willow Neilson Quartet. Now and then music recorded locally is also featured on the program such as Rachael Hannan’s “The Sweetest Sound” plus a gig guide for touring artists.

Barry O’Sullivan has been involved in the jazz scene for many years, even running his own jazz venue in Sydney: ‘Frying Times Fish Café’ in the 80s. His program 'Jazz on Sunday' has been heard locally on BLU FM in the Blue Mountains for the past seven years. 'A Jazz Hour' now approaches its third year nationally on COMRADSAT. His extensive knowledge of both the local and overseas scene makes the program an ideal listening base for jazz fans across the country.

The program strives to create an awareness of primarily the musicians involved in the local scene and their music, while bonding with the music being recorded internationally by their contemporaries. Nostalgic recordings from the bebop and swing eras are also given prominence from time to time as Barry believes that these are the very roots of jazz history which can never be ignored or forgotten.
