BluNote The Rocklympics got off to a great start last Wednesday night (4 October). BLU FM’s Francis Dutton, the Rocklympics MC says that the first heat of the competition last Wednesday attracted a capacity crowd. “The competition was strong but, at the end, the honors went to Fluoxetine by a short nose.” The band competition is presented by BLU FM 89.1 and the Carrington Hotel is a chance for all local bands to make their rock ‘n’ roll dreams come true. “You can be the best band around, but nobody will know you exist unless you have exposure,” said organizer Ken Quinnell. “It gives new bands a chance at to gain valuable exposure and performance experience as well as a shot at valuable prizes. First prize is $300 plus a paid gig at the Carrington. Second prize is $100 plus four hours recording time at Sound Heaven Studio in Wentworth Falls. Third prize is $100. “The Rocklympics is evidence of the diversity of music we have here in the Blue Mountains and to the way it brings people together,” says Michael Brischetto, manager of the Carrington Hotel. “We are proud to support the competition and the encouragement and exposure it gives to emerging musicians.” “The rules are simple. Any type of music is welcome – rock, alternative, indie, hip-hop, whatever. The songs must be originals. At least one member of each band must be a resident of the Blue Mountains or Lithgow. Bands must be unsigned. Each band will perform a 30-minute set. There will be three bands each night. Judging of heats and semi-finals will be by audience response. The final will be a combination of audience response and judging by well-known sector professionals.” “We’ll see new bands battle it out on the best new stage in town. That’s the battleground. The weapons are musical instruments. But, there are no losers – every band gets the exposure and performance opportunity,” says Ken. We have places available for bands in the final heat. For details and registration form click here or phone Ken at the office on 4782 9286. Bands competing in the second heat on Wednesday, 11 October, at 7.00 pm are Lewis & the Gumnut Babies, Fear of Falling and BlueSkie Grounded and admission is free. The 2006 Blue Mountains Music Week is scheduled for 17th to 26th November. Some of the highlights of the week will include:
BLUE MOUNTAINS MUSIC AWARDS 2006 BLU FM 89.1 community radio is inviting entries for the Blue Mountains Music Awards for 2006 that will be presented at a ceremony during Blue Mountains Music Week in November. “We present these Awards annually in recognition of the unique place music holds in our local community,” says BLU FM president Ken Quinnell. “We had unprecedented support for the Awards last year and they are now a permanent feature of the music calendar. “Whether you’re a group or a solo performer, we want to hear from you. There are 14 categories to choose from, from rock and hip hop all the way to folk and classical. Take your pick.” The Awards are a part of promoting the grass roots music sector and provide an opportunity for local groups and artists to gain valuable recognition. They are a stepping-stone to a music career. Although they are aimed primarily at independent and unsigned performers who are seeking exposure and new opportunities, signed musicians or bands may also enter. To be eligible you need to be living or working in the Blue Mountains. “Entries need to be accompanied by a recording. This may be a released record, a demo or live recording. The quality of production is not a consideration although we would prefer them to be good enough to play on air on BLU FM. “Entering the Blue Mountains Music Awards is a great way to promote both your own career and the local music sector as a whole. This is an overdue acknowledgment of the abundance of talent we have here in the mountains,” says Ken. You can enter a maximum of three songs in each of the 14 categories. The categories are Folk; Country; Blues; Jazz; World; Classical; Choir; Dance/R ‘n’ B; Metal/Hardcore; Hip Hop/Rap; Alternative; Rock; Pop; Youth (under 18).
