Award winning community radio station BLUFM 89.1 is celebrating 21years of broadcasting this year. The first sounds were heard across the airwaves on Saturday 7th June 1986 when a handful of adventurous members gathered together and remembered to switch on the microphone beginning what has now become one of the most innovative and widely listened to community broadcasters in Australia.

The station has been involved in heavily promoting local musical talent over the years through its Singer/Songwriter Competition, The Rock Olympics, The Electronic Music Competition and the Blue Mountains Music Awards. It even has a Dog Song Competition!

The station connects with the youth of the area through its BLU Youth Online Network as well as numerous youth oriented programs which go to air.

Starting out at breakfast with news ,traffic and weather updates , through to interviews with local vets ,doctors and politicians, entertainment reviews and news, the station continuously provides the community with Rural Fire Service information, a Community Noticeboard, a Talking Newspaper for the visually impaired, a huge cross genre of music from the oldies to the very newest with seventy one presenters bringing their listeners a platform of variety from health and well being to Sex, God and Garage Sales.

“A 21st Birthday Bash” in celebration of the event is to be held on July 1st at The Clarendon Theatre Restaurant commencing at 6.30pm and all are welcome to attend. Admission is $15.00.

The concert will feature The Spooky Men’s Chorale, local bands, Cut The Cake and Babalito, jazz singer Kate Swaddling with Sean McKenzie on piano, The Tuba Quartet as well as vocalist Dimity Bryant with Greg Agar on keys.

The celebration event is being organized by long time serving radio station members Betty Chialvo, Colin Semmler and Barry O’Sullivan and a committee of volunteers, All featured local musicians and singers will perform for charity to help raise much needed funds for the erection of a new antenna so that broadcasting can continue clearer and further into the 21st century.
