Coming up on
Wild Mood Swings:

9 & 16 January: Stardust Memories

A world without starmen, diamond dogs, scary monsters and even laughing gnomes would be a much drabber place, so join us for a two-programme tribute to the man responsible for them all, David Robert Jones (David Bowie to you) who turned an implausible 60 on the 8th of January. As well as playing a few Bowie obscurities, we've a guest list of fans ready to cover Jonesy's finest cuts, including The Cure, Blondie, Nirvana, Tom Jones, Beck, and... yes, Lulu. BLUFM is blue and there's nothing we can do, basically.

23 January: Glam Slam

As a coda to our Bowiethon, Wild Mood Swings gets all glittery for this tribute to Glam Rock, the silliest looking musical movement in the history of sparkliness. Dig out your platforms and jiggle precariously to songs by Slade, T Rex, Sweet, Alice Cooper and Roxy Music re-interpreted by such wanna-be Young Dudes as Placebo, Nickelback, Bono, Tori Amos, and, of course, Pat Boone. No, really. And if you've ever wondered what Nine Inch Nails would sound like fronted by Freddie Mercury, wonder no more.

30 January: Summertime

We've made it through Christmas and New Year; now all we have to do is survive the rest of summer. The pros and cons of the season are explored in this show by such honorary meteorologists as Elvis Costello, the B-52s, Erasure, Jewel, the Tom Tom Club, and summery old Nick Cave. Pink zinc and board shorts optional.

Wild Mood Swings is a truly eclectic mix of music recorded from the 60s to sometime last month, and boasts a similarly broad range of artists. House faves include both the cream of the classic acts, such as The Beatles, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin and Mr Alice Cooper, and a spirited bunch of quirkier artists like Tom Waits, Rob Zombie, Tori Amos, Def FX and crazed cello babes, Rasputina.

Each Tuesday night, we indulge in a new theme, such as:

  • Seasonal shows - like our Christmas, Yule and Hallowe'en programs;
  • Multicultural mix-and-match shows, like our West Goes East specials which showcase songs that mix Western and Eastern sensibilities;
  • Cover version spectaculars, like our Darken Up shows (which take popular tunes into strangely haunted settings) and all-star tributes to influential artists like our Beatles and Bob Dylan specials and our Led Zeppelin covers tribute called The Song Remains Slightly Different;
  • Barking mad collections of songs on subjects such as spies, crime, superheroes ("Weird" Al Yankovic's compression of the entire Spiderman movie into Billy Joel's "Piano Man" was curiously impressive we felt), and weird and wonderful space music (our Off the Planet specials are guaranteed to live up to their name);
  • Sycophantic tributes to movies, directors and soundtrack composers, like our Lynch Mob special (aired on Mr David Lynch's birthday) and The Timmy and Danny Show (featuring music from the films of Tim Burton and the film scores of Danny Elfman).

We seem to specialise more and more in slightly loopy or unexpected covers. Recent attractions have included such gems as Megadeath stomping all over Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Were Made for Walking", Marilyn Manson scaring the life out of "Suicide is Painless" (the theme from M*A*S*H*), and Little Roger and the Goosebumps blending the lyric of "Gilligan's Island" to the tune of "Stairway to Heaven" (must be heard to be believed).

Antonia and Bill, in another world, work as freelance writers. They have lived in Blackheath for the last seven years and have been regularly broadcasting on BLU FM since their first radio show on 26 February 2001. Some listeners may remember their Monday 10:00-to-midday show called "Ears to the Ground".
